Symptoms:
- The controllers periodically lose connection to the network.
- The devices appear to be online, but there is a delay in their response.
- Actions and automations are running intermittently.
- The problems persist despite good coverage and a correctly configured network.
Possible causes:
- The router has Wi-Fi optimisation features enabled which do not support IoT devices correctly.
- Algorithms for managing access time to the radio spectrum restrict the transmission of certain devices.
- Network performance-enhancing features favour devices that generate more traffic at the expense of IoT devices that send small amounts of data.
- Certain roaming mechanisms or Wi-Fi client optimisation features may cause problems in maintaining a stable connection.
Suggested solutions:
- Disable the Airtime Fairness feature in your router’s settings and check whether the problem is resolved.
- Disable additional Wi-Fi optimisation features, such as Smart Connect or similar mechanisms for automatic client management.
- Set a fixed Wi-Fi channel instead of automatic channel selection.
- Limit the channel width in the 2.4 GHz band to 20 MHz.
- Update your router's software to the latest version.
- After each change, restart the router and check that the devices are working properly.
Note for the installer:
In some routers, advanced wireless network optimisation algorithms may adversely affect communication between IoT devices. This is particularly common with the Airtime Fairness feature, which may limit the transmission time of devices sending small amounts of data. If you experience problems with communication stability, it is recommended that you disable this feature and retest the installation.
