Symptoms:
- The controllers periodically go offline.
- There are delays in carrying out commands.
- Problems arise once a signal booster (repeater) is installed.
- Some devices are experiencing connectivity issues despite a strong Wi-Fi signal.
Possible causes:
- A repeater retransmits all wireless traffic, which increases latency and network load.
- The devices may switch between router and repeater mode, causing temporary interruptions in communication.
- Some repeaters do not handle multicast or broadcast communication, or IoT devices, correctly.
- The amplifier operates on the same channel as the router, increasing the level of interference and congestion on the radio spectrum.
- Cheap repeaters often have limited performance and struggle to cope with a larger number of devices.
Suggested solutions:
- Where possible, use an additional access point connected to the network via a cable instead of a repeater.
- If you are using a mesh system, ensure that the devices have a stable connection to the nearest node.
- Check that the repeater has the latest software.
- Limit the number of devices using the repeater.
- Check the quality of the connection between the repeater and the main router.
Note for the installer:
We do not recommend using Wi-Fi repeaters in building automation installations. Although they improve coverage, they often introduce additional delays, increase the number of retransmissions and may cause communication problems with IoT devices. A far better solution is to use an additional access point connected to the network via a wired connection or a well-configured mesh system. This makes the network more stable, predictable and less prone to communication issues.
